Freecycle.org you can get free things for your child, people offer free items, you do have to offer one thing for free first when you sign up, it can be as little as even a potholder, just something.
Also, I go to indoor yard sales in the winter months, went to one this morning at our local community center and they had a ton of kids toys.
Check the local free newspapers too if you get any coming to your home, some people are still having yard sales, you can get great kids stuff there. Your child won't know the difference that the items are used and if they are in good condition, you will have saved a ton of money.
I am presently unemployed so I feel your pain. It's tough out there. This year I'm buying used items for my family for Christmas. I find alot of things new in the wrappers/boxes at yard sales etc. Also check thrift stores.
